There’s no upside for the GOP from the California recall

It’s generally the case that losing an election amounts to a near-complete waste of resources for the candidate who receives fewer votes but, in this case, there wasn’t much benefit to the winner, either. Newsom was governor Tuesday, is Wednesday, and will be in a month, with the hundreds of millions of dollars spent vanishing into various consultants’ pockets and local TV station bank accounts, and to pay state workers for what amounted to asking voters the equivalent of “are you sure?” They were sure, by about the same margin they were sure they wanted Joe Biden to be president last year.
