Jan. 6 hearing recap: Trump White House aides say multiple GOP members of Congress asked for pardons

White House counsel Pat Cipollone was “extremely supportive” of efforts from Justice Department officials to stymie Trump’s requests to overturn the election, top Justice official Richard Donoghue testified Thursday. Cipollone also called a letter that Justice official Jeffrey Clark drafted to states about election fraud was a “murder-suicide pact” — a phrase reported in a Senate Judiciary Committee report last year. Cipollone, who had a difficult relationship with Trump but stayed until the last day of his presidency, has not agreed to testify publicly, citing privilege issues, according to a person close to him. But Justice Department officials and others say Cipollone was on their side and was trying to push back against some of Trump’s worst impulses.
