A third of Americans say close friends or family have died of covid-19

One out of every 463 Americans alive at the beginning of 2020 has since died of covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. By now, the virus has touched every place in the country, exacting a varying toll. Most of the deaths have occurred in heavily populated places, given that more people live in those places. But the 50 counties that have seen the most deaths relative to population are home, on average, to fewer than 11,000 people.
